Bed & Breakfast Boudoir

Fellow ShootStyle member and Maine wedding photographer Andree Kehn invited me to join her for a small boudoir shoot at the Edgewater Farm Bed and Breakfast in Phippsburg, Maine. It was a great fun getting together with her and a couple of models with the sole purpose of creating some sexy portfolio images.

Valentines Fun

Every couple of months, ShootStyle, an association of New England wedding photographers I belong to runs an assignment series asking photographers to creatively illustrate a concept. In honor of valentine’s day, the most recent assignment was to illustrate the concept of ‘Done Me Wrong.” Thanks to my wife for playing along!

Sadly, after shooting she went away for a few days and when she returned, the oversized box of candy used as the prop was more the half gone. She had to throw out the rest to save me from myself!

Off-Beat Back Bay Engagement Sessions á la ShootStyle

Me and five other members of ShootStyle team (Stacey Doyle, Jamie Wexler, Michelle Turner, Zofia Waig, and Andree Kehn) got together to try something a little different. We’ve been shooting a lot of fabulous women in fashionable wedding dresses, but we realized we’ve neglected the guys. So for our latest shoot, we grabbed a bunch of couples and headed downtown for a shoot that was part engagement session and part “trash the dress.”

The first couple I worked with, Jackie & David, were up for anything I asked them to do, and often took things a bit farther. They were a riot!

I only enough time to do a couple of setups with Rachel & Adam. Rachel, you might have noticed, is a ShootStyle alumni, having modeled for us on our Elm Bank shoot. Adam was a great sport! Cheers you two!

2 Photographers – 2 Visions

Last weekend Andree (Maine Wedding Photographer) invited me to return to the shores of Sebago Lake in Maine. We had a developed a pretty good working rhythm during our last shoot together, and for most of the day, we each did our own thing and came away with two unique views of the same event. During a quiet moment, we asked the couple to pose in front a classic New England setting–a shack which was covered with old buoys.

Andree moved in close enough to see the weathering of the old buoys and threw the couple out of focus in the background:

I shot the couple through a bush with a plastic lens, framing the them against the wall.

I think that having the same couple, the same setting, the same light, and two shots taken within seconds of each other, really illustrates how two photographers will visualize the same subject differently.

Vive la différence!

Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake in Maine

This weekend I headed up to Maine to work with Maine Wedding Photographer extraordinaire, Andree Kehn. Andree is lucky enough to live right near the venue, Migis Lodge. It’s a small lodge on the banks of Sebago Lake in Casco that tends to have weddings in the Spring and Fall and reunions and get-togethers during the high season. Andree told me this works out great for her as most of her clientele gets married outside. In the Spring and Fall they need a venue that gives them an option to escape in side if the weather gets nasty or cold. The weather was perfect for us however. What I love about working with Andree is that she gives me free reign to do anything I want when taking pictures. So at this event I walked far away from the ceremony looking for angles that put the service in context of this peaceful setting. I also tried out new lighting equipment, and shot from balconies and lying on the floor. I was very happy with the images.

Sometimes I can’t believe the talent I’m surrounded by here in the Northeast. That notion was super clear last week when I joined the six other members of ShootStyle for the most recent in our series of color themed wedding fashion shoots.

Elm Bank Reservation in Wellesley MA provided a cool and colorful backdrop for the gowns which were custom designed for us by dress designer Julia Anne Ebel, of Celtic Dragon Dress Designs. Stacey also showed her mad sewing skillz by re-purposing some older gowns by adding colorful tulle flourishes.

Colorful Wedding Dresses

This past weekend I joined up with my talented ShootStyle friends, photographers Jamie Wexler, Stacey Doyle, Michelle Turner, Alicia Williams, and Jeff Newcum, to shoot an fashionable twist on wedding dresses – winter colors!

Did you know that the current popularity of the white wedding dress is due in part to the power of photography? True! In 1840, Queen Victoria wore a white gown at her wedding to incorporate some lace she owned. Her wedding photograph was widely published and brides have been emulating her color choice ever since. Prior to the Victorian era, a bride might wear any color except black (the color of mourning) or red (which suggested ill-repute). Serendipitously, there’s a recent post on historical and current wedding dress colors at a blog I follow, COLORlovers.

Many thanks to the modern and fashionable Renaissance Providence Hotel for letting us run around their marbled halls. Last year, my wife and I did a staycation at the Renaissance and we fell in love with its funky rooms, friendly staff and Temple Downtown, the chic restaurant and lounge located downstairs.

The amazing and colorful dresses you see below are the creation on Framingham dress designer Julia Anne Ebel, of Celtic Dragon Dress Designs. We asked her to create dresses inspired by a winter color palette, and wow, did she deliver! Stay tuned for Julia’s new couture wedding dress site which is coming soon.

The models’ dramatic makeup was provided by makeup artist, Jenny DiMucci, who I’ve worked with on an earlier ShootStyle outing.

And huge thank you to Brittany and Kate, our gorgeous models. I’m always on the geeky side of the lens, but I’ve got to imagine it’s hard to have a half dozen photographers simultaneously vying for your attention, yet Brittany and Kate handled the day with poise and aplomb!
